Introducing Doris Pasteleur Hall

Doris Pasteleur Hall is the Program Director and Master Trainer at United Pilates™. Doris brings over 30 years of teaching experience to our students. She has been a teacher trainer since 1997 at PhysicalMind and Balanced Body prior to joining United Pilates™. Doris has conducted numerous workshops internationally on anatomy and movement. As one of the first students of Tom Meyer’s Anatomy Trains, Doris’ teaching is rooted in a deep understanding of kinetic anatomy, body language from kinesis, and neuro-musculo dynamics. In her own practice, she is a renown movement educator, assisting students/clients to recover from injuries and pain. Outside of her practice, her research has centered on somatic modalities of Laban, Body-Mind Centering, and Anatomy in Clay. She has trained and taught at Carol Trier’s Pilates Studio, White Cloud, and the first Gyrotonic studio. We are honored and grateful to present one of the strongest teachers of movement, dance, pilates, and yoga to you.

Sports Medicine: Studio Fitness and Pilates for Groups

Entering into the Pilates and Wellness industries is easier than before. Courses are widely available and delivered over condensed periods, but are they effective?

The discerning clients will show their concern for effectiveness and safety issues in working with the newly minted trainers. Many will not hesitate to shop around for a suitable trainer. Confidence is probably the most important result you will gain by training comprehensively. In academia, knowing how a theory was founded and presented from original sources and progressed through further research and study makes for a strong (reliant) application of the theory to the real world through inventions and informed skills.

In the case of Pilates, entering the studio fitness industry, whether through the classically trained or contemporary, is just an entry point.

Most certification courses don’t even begin to truly assess and enable the new trainers the rehabilitative work that Pilates is able to deliver unless the trainers specialize and learn kinesiology and biomechanics which deliver on this promise.

The purpose of learning the classical system is simple: it is the root of the Pilates system. Like learning history, understanding where the movement began and looked like is not only important but empowering. Seeing the source will enlighten you to learn more about this unique body movement, how the transformations into therapy can also return to the rigorous original set, and what is different in today’s needs. For businesses employing the classically trained, this line of training is a strong protocol method, similar to Yoga, Gyrotonic, Martial Arts, Group Fitness, and other recent methods. This allows for consistency in programming.

The contemporary methods are merited for its flexibility and adjusted approach per client class. Some trainers teach with such versatility that even the Pilates hundreds aren’t taught. This is the evolution of studio fitness where only the exercises that make sense to the businesses and classes are used. The studio fitness environment is very different. Group classes are often focused on delivering energy, pace, variety, and (safe) challenges.

Pilates can deliver highly efficient exercises to a wide range of people, age, and fitness levels because it is inherently challenging. However, it does take a strong (knowledgeable) trainer to:

  • Prescribe and describe appropriate exercises (be it classical or contemporary or any other system) to the needs of the clients
  • Inspire clients to attend classes and stay on track to their fitness progression
  • Train with purpose of giving a real workout that are stepping stones to reaping long term benefits
